Should I use a Company Name on my NetSelect account?
Keep in mind that whatever information is used to set up your NetSelect account will also be the domain name owner information that will be used each time that you register a new domain name. If you have used a company name on your NetSelect account, it will be that company name that will appear on the WHOIS database as the domain name owner (Registrant).
Per ICANN policy, when a company name is used on a NetSelect account and/or domain name, the company name will supersede the individual's name listed as the domain name owner. For example, John Smith of ABC Products is listed on the NetSelect account and domain name. Because a company name is listed, it will be ABC Products that will be considered the domain name owner and NetSelect account owner, not John Smith.
Does it matter if I use a company name?
No: If you are a registered business and can provide business ID, such as a Tax ID, a copy of a Business License, or a copy of a Trade Name (DBA) Certificate AND what your business to be the domain name owner, then it is acceptable to use a company name on your NetSelect account.
Yes: If you are not a registered business and/or you would be unable to provide acceptable Business ID and/or you do not wish the business to be the domain name owner or the NetSelect account owner, then it is NOT advisable to use a company name when setting up the NetSelect account.
Why would I need to provide a copy of my Business ID?
Lets say, for example, that you are locked out of your NetSelect account because of an invalid email address and that you are unable to reset your account password via our email system. When a company name is listed on a NetSelect account, it is that company that is considered the legal owner of the account. Valid Business ID will be required whenever you need our Domain Services department to update your email address so that you are able to reset the account password via our email system.
Valid Business ID provided by the requester establishes, by law, that the person making the request to our Domain Services department is authorized to do so and has the company's permission to gain access to the NetSelect account.
